Jagannath Pahadia Biography

Jagannath Pahadia is an Indian politician from Rajasthan associated with Indian National Congress. One of the prominent congress leaders from Rajasthan, he served as the ninth Chief Minister of Rajasthan, 6 June 1980 - 13 July 1981, though he served for a short term of 403 days. Before he served the position, President’s rule was implemented in the state for almost 5 months. A successful parliamentarian, he was elected to Lok Sabha during 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th assembly elections, thus serving 4 terms as MP. Except his first assembly elections, he got elected to Lok Sabha from Bayana constituency. His wife Shanti also served as a parliamentarian from Rajasthan.

 

Jagannath Pahadia was born on 15 January 1932 in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan state. Nathilal Pahadia and Chanda Devi are his parents. Jagannath was excellent in academics, and holds M.A. and LL.B. His education was completed at different universities. He completed LLB from Government Law College, Rajasthan University. He became active in politics in the post-independent period, and got elected to second Lok Sabha representing Indian National Congress. He got elected in 4th, 5th and 7th Lok Sabha on Congress ticket, and he represented Bayana constituency for all these three general assembly elections.

 

He became a prominent figure in state politics in the 1970s, and became the ninth Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 1980. He was a junior level Minister in government of India for many years. He got married to Shanti, who was also active in politics. He was appointed as Governor of Bihar in 1989 for a short term. In 2009, he was appointed as governor of Haryana, and he completed the term of 5 years in 2014.
