Jagadish Mohanty Biography

Jagadish Mohanty is a popular writer of Oriya literature who has received many prestigious awards for his literary contributions. Noted feminist writer and columnist, Sarojini Sahoo is his wife. His published novels are Nija Nija Panipatha, Uttaradhikar, Kanishka Kanishka, Durdina and Adrushya Sakala. His short stories are Dipahara Dekhinathiba Lokatie, Ekaki Ashwarohi, Saturir Jagadish, Album, Dakshina Duari Ghara, Irsha eka Rutu, Mephestophelese-ra Pruthibi, Nian O Anyanya Galpa, Juddhakshtre Eka, Bija Bruxsha Chhaya, Suna Ilishi and Sundartam Pap. His stories have been translated in English and several regional languages like Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and Telugu. Mohanty has also done some translation works from Oriya to Hindi.

Jagadish Mohanty was born in the year 1951 in an iron mine of northern periphery of Orissa.  He spent more than 30 years in iron mines. This renowned writer of Oriya language is often regarded as a trendsetter of modern Oriya literature.  He received Orissa Sahitya Akademy Award in the year 1990 for his novel Kanishka Kanishka. His short story collection Suna Ilishi earned him prestigious Sarala Award in the year 2003. He has been honoured with Jhankar Award, Dharitri Award 1985, Utkal Sahitya Samaj Katha Samman and Bhubaneswar Book fair Award for his contribution to Oriya fiction. Apart from being a noted writer, he has been associated with journals and magazines as well. He has served as the editor of “The Sambartaka”, a literary journal from 1980 –82.

Doordarshan National Channel has telecasted a documentary film on both Jagadish and Sarojini, the couple writer of Oriya literature.  The documentary titled, Literary post card was directed by Dr. Satti Khanna. Though he stayed away from cultural capital of the state of Orissa, his works have deeply reflected Oriya literature and culture.
