J. V. Ramana Murthi Biography

J. V. Ramana Murthi is a noted Telugu actor associated with cinema and theater. Veteran actor J. V. Somayajulu of Shankarabharanam fame was his elder brother. Ramana Murthi has been a part of several successful plays such as "Natakam", "Keerthi Seshulu", "Kaala Rathri", "Phani", "Evaru Donga", "N.G.O.", "Kappalu" and "Katamraju Katha". Telugu socio-political film, MLA in 1957 marked his film debut and since then he acted in around 150 films, mostly playing character roles. Kanyasulkam is his most memorable play, based on the social evil Kanyasulkam existed in Telugu culture during British rule. As a film actor, Saptapadhi (1981), Shri Datta Darshanam (1985) and Arya (2004) are his best works. Currently he has taken retirement from acting.

He was born on 20 May 1933 in a village of Vizianagaram district. He got associated with theatre during his younger days and regularly participated in intercollege drama competitions. His passion to acting drew him to theatre. During his college days he won best actor award for the play "Vishwa Shanti" scripted by Athreya in Interuniversity Competition. After college days he became fully active in plays and has played noted roles in plays such as "Kaala Rathri", "Phani", "Evaru Donga" etc. Murthi’s association with theatre opened him doors to the world of cinema.

He received his first break to movies through the Telugu film, MLA, a social drama. Since then he played about 150 different roles in a career spanning to more than 50 years. He played the cameo role of a priest in Allu Arjun’s mega blockbuster Arya in 2004. He was also seen in Maayajaalam (2006) and Shankar Dada Zindabad (2007). Nowadays he is less active in films. For his performance in the social drama Kanyasulkam he was facilitated jointly by the Kalavedika Cultural and Charitable Trust and Praja Spandana at a function organised at the Visakhapatnam in 2010.
