J. R. D. Tata Biography

J. R. D. Tata was an Indian industrialist and pioneer aviator. He received Bharat Ratna award from Government of India in the year 1992. He received Legion of Honor award from French government in the year 1954.

 

He was born on 29th July 1904 in Paris in France. His father, Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata belongs to Parsi Community and his mother Suzanne Sooni Briere was a French lady. Jamsetji Tata was his first cousin. He spent his childhood days in France and so he was fluent in French language. He attended French Foreign Legion and Cathedral and John Connon School at Bombay.

 

He was the founder of many companies like TCS, Tata Motors, Titan Industries, Tata Communications, Tata tea and Voltas. He married Thelma Vicaji and had no children. Being inspired by the pioneer aviator Louis Bleriot, he obtained his pilot license on 10th February 1929. He was known as the father of Indian civil aviation as he founded the first commercial airline of India, Tata Airlines in the year 1932. This is called as Air India at present.

 

He joined Tata & sons group as an apprentice in 1925. He was elected as its chairman in 1938 and became the head of the largest industrial organization. He served as the Director of Tata Group of Companies and was leading the Steel, Power, Engineering, Chemical and Hospitality groups. He was against bribing the politicians and the use of black market.

 

He raised the assets of Tata Group from 100 million USD to 5 billion USD. He started 14 companies under his leadership and served for over five decades and left the group on 26th July 1988.

 

When Sir Dorabji Tata Trust was incepted in 1932, he became its trustee and served in this position for over half a century. This trust established the first cancer hospital of Asia, Tata Memorial Center for Cancer, Research and Treatment in Bombay in 1941. He founded TISS and TIFR. He died on 29th November 1993.
