J. C. Kumarappa Biography

J. C. Kumarappa was an Indian economist and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. His full name is Joseph Chelladurai Cornelius, born at Tanjore, present-day Tamil Nadu in a Christian family. He has also contributed to the nation in the form of many books. Swadeshi, Grinding of Cereals, Europe Through Gandhian Eyes, Economy of Permanence, Why the Village Movement, Cow in Our Economy, Peace and Prosperity, Gandhian Economic Thought, Swaraj for the Masses, Village Industries, Stone Walls and Iron Bars, Present Economic Situation, Public Finance and Our Poverty, Clive to Keynes, Christianity: Its Economy and Way of Life, Lessons from Europe, The Gandhian Economy and Other Essays and An Economic Survey of Matar Taluka are among his published works.

 

J. C. Kumarappa was born on 4 January 1892 in Tanjore as the sixth kid of Solomon Doraisamy and Esther Rajanayagam. His father was a Public Works officer. His younger brother, Bharatan Kumarappa was also an associate of Gandhi. He completed studies of economics and chartered accountancy in Britain in 1919 and changed his name to J. C. Kumarappa once returned back. Then he returned back to US and obtained degrees in economics and business administration at Syracuse University and Columbia University. When he returned, Kumarappa published an article on the British tax policy and its exploitation of the Indian economy.

 

He met Mahatma Gandhi in 1929 and on his request he prepared an economic survey of rural Gujarat, which he published as ‘A Survey of Matar Taluka in the Kheda District’. Kumarappa later worked to combine Christian principles and Gandhian values of trusteeship and non-violence. After India's independence he worked for the Planning Commission of India and for the party to develop national policies for agriculture and rural development.
