Ishwar Petlikar Biography

Ishwar Petlikar was a noted author and journalist associated with Gujarati literature. He has also worked as a teacher at various schools. His works are deeply influenced by the rural culture of Gujarat and tells about social issues, culture and reforms. Wrote more than 40 books he was awarded Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1961. His first novel Janamtip was published in 1944. Since then he has contributed to Gujarati literature in the form of novels, novella, Biographical works, essays and columns. His columns and articles were regularly featured in Loknaad, Nirikshak, Stree, Gujarat Samachar and Sandesh. Gujarati film, Lohini Sagai (1980) was based on his novella with the same name.

Ishwar Petlikar was born on 9 September 1916 in village of Petli, near Petlad in Gujarat. His birth name is Ishwar Patel and he changed his surname to Petlikar in dedication his village. His school education was completed in the villages of Petli, Malataj and Sojitra and after completing his teaching training from Vadodara in 1938 he started teaching at Nedia and Saniyada villages. Since his academic years he was drawn to writings and started writings since then. Apart from writing and working as a teacher, he also served as the editor of Patidar and Aryaprakash magazines.

After his first novel Janamtip (1944), he published Bhavsagar (1951), followed by Pankhi no Melo (1948) and its sequel Patalkuvo (1949). Kajal ni Kotdi, Dharati no Avtar, Kanku ne Kanya, Mari Haiyasagadi, Taruna Othe Dungar, Yug na Endhan, Runanubandh, Jujva Roop, Setubandh, Aabhijaat, Lakshagriha are other major novels. Gramchitro, Dhoopsali, Gomatighat and Vidyanagar na Viswakarma are his biography works. Parasmani, Chingari, Aakashganga and Kathputali are his novella collections. He passed away in 1983 following a heart attack.
