Ishwar Chandra Gupta Biography

Ishwar Chandra Gupta was a noted writer and poet who lived in Bengal in the 19th century. He was a renowned student of Dwarkanath Vidyabhusan, the founder and publisher of first political newspaper of Bengal, Somprakash. He is regarded as one of the earliest poets in Bengali language who brought modern era to Bengali literature. Instead of writing on Hindu mythological figures that was common in the 19th century, Gupta wrote poems about common man and his daily life. He is also known for contributing numerous autobiographies of noted writers of Bengal. Many of his works belonged to satire group and he has also criticized in a satire way, those who blindly followed British.

He was born in 1812 in Bengal. He lost his mother at a younger age and later his uncle became his local guardian. Thus his childhood days were spent at Kolkata. He was born in Kanchrapara, 24 Parganas. In those days, poets were not regarded as civilized and they used to use abuse words as well as erotic subjects for their writings. But Gupta gave new direction to Bengali and thus one of the earliest poets of modern poetry. Many of his poems have been included in school and college syllabus, both in Bengal as well as Bangladesh.

He started the newspaper Sambad Prabhakar with Jogendra Mohan Tagore in 1831, which marked the beginning of many famous poets of Bengal. Many of his works were known for double meaning as well as expressing ideas in satire forms. He is regarded as one of the earliest advocates of Hindu view of India. Though he first opposed widow remarriages, later he promoted the remarriage of virgin widows and emphasized on women's education.
