Ishu Patel Biography

Ishu Patel is an animation film maker who has won many international awards for his animation films. He produces animation films as well. He has been associated with National Film Board of Canada for 25 years where he developed animation techniques and styles to support his themes and vision. He was born and brought up in Gujarat and later moved abroad. His projects include – Afterlife, Bead Game, Perspectrum, How Death Came to Earth, Moondust, Divine Fate, Paradise and Top Priority. His animation films – Paradise (1985) and Bead Game (1978) have been shortlisted at Oscars for best animation short film.

In 2009, Moondust won Award of excellence in animation at 50th Annual Illustration Exhibition, New York. Paradise was shortlisted at Oscar awards for best animated short film. In 1995, Divine fate won numerous awards including Unicef prize at Ottawa International Animation Film Festival, Silver medal – Ecology at Medikinale International Film Festival and Special distinction for its message at Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Annecy. Top priority won Blue ribbon Human concern award at 5th American Film Festival, New York in 1983 and many other awards. His other works have also been awarded several times at many award functions.     

Patel was born in Gujarat. He received his B.F.A. from the Faculty of Fine Arts from M. S. University of Baroda. Then he became a faculty at newly formed National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. During this time, a group of international experts was invited to the National Institute of Design where Ishu Patel finished his post graduate studies in Graphic Design. He got a scholarship from Rockefeller Foundation and got opportunity to learn animation film making National Film Board of Canada in the year 1972. Thus he became a part of NFB.
