Irrfan Khan Biography

Irfan Khan, one among the most versatile actors of present cinema is recently in news for the best actor award in National awards 2013. He shared National awards 2012 with Vikram Ghokale and he won it for his wonderful performance in Paan Singh Tomar. Irfan Khan is a well –known face to everyone as he is a wonderful actor who has given his best performance for Doordarshan’s most popular serials like Chanakya, Chandrakantha, Jai Hanuman, Bharat ek khoj and Sara Jahan Hamara. He has worked as a character actor and villain in many serials of Star Plus as well.

 

This versatile actor began his career as a theatre artist and it was just co-incidence that Mira Nair offered him a role in Oscar nominated movie ‘Salam Bombay’ in 1988. Again he became busy in his theatre world as well as Doordarshan serials. His role as twin brothers – Badrinath (positive shades) and Somnath (negative shades) in Chandrakantha was well appreciated and he became a known person to every home.

 

Simultaneously he acted in many Bollywood movies. His role in Ek doctor ki Maut (1991) was well appreciated. Serial Chandrakantha was aired in Doordarshan during 1994. In many films he has done the role of a cop or a public prosecutor. Movies like Kasoor, Rog, Gunaah, The amazing spiderman, A mighty heart, Slum dog millionaire and Bada din are best examples of such roles. His works in Oscar winning movie ‘Life of pie’ was also well appreciated. Thus he involved himself in many international projects as well.

 

Best movie of his career as a performer is none other than Paan Singh Tomar which gave him both National awards as well as Critics’ award for best actor in Filmfare. He was nominated for best actor too, though couldn’t win at last. He has won Filmfare best actor supporting role for the hit movie, ‘Life in a metro’. His career best movies include Paan Singh Tomar, The warrior, 7 Khoon Maaf, Krazy 4, Yeh saali zindagi, Thank you, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster returns, Hisss, Maqbool, Ek doctor ki maut, Thank you, Namesake, Life in a metro, Knock out and Oscar record breaking movie, Slum dog millionaire. Thus he has associated with three Oscar nominated movies – Salam Bombay, Life of pie and Slum dog millionaire thus proving himself to be the one among the most versatile actors of Bollywood at present times.

 

He was admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on 28 April 2020, where he started receiving treatment for a colon infection. Khan died the following day at age 53, from the infection.
