Indu Sundaresan Biography

Indu Sundaresan is an American writer of Indian origin. She hails from Tamil Nadu. One of the most beautiful story tellers of our times, she is also addressed as the reigning empress of Indian historical fiction. Taj Mahal trilogy (novels) is among her famous books, published in 2000s, which was later translated in Tamil by her mother and published by Vanathi Publications. It’s being made to a TV series. The Splendour of Silence (2006), In the Convent of Little Flowers (2008) and The Mountain of Light (2013) are her other major works.

 

She was born in Tamil Nadu. As a child, she was influenced by her father’s stories on mythology and history. Her father was an Indian Air Force pilot, who died in a crash, while on duty. The family then moved to Bangalore, where she spent her younger days before moving to US. She was introduced to the world of books during her stay in Bangalore, and her passion to books later made her an accomplished writer of historical fiction. She is currently settled in Seattle, Washington with her family. She holds Master’s degrees in OR and Economics.

 

She published the first one of Taj Mahal trilogy, Twentieth Wife in 2002. It told the story of a young widow Mehrunissa, who later came to be known as Nur Jahan. It won Washington State Book Award. Her second novel The Feast of Roses is the sequel to the first one, and before she published the final book of the series, she wrote The Splendour of Silence (2006) and In the Convent of Little Flowers (2008). The final book of the trilogy, Shadow Princess was published in 2010. The Mountain of Light in 2013 is her last published book.
