Indu Malhotra Biography

Indu Malhotra is a judge of the Supreme Court of India, who has been a senior counsel practising in the same Court for the past 30 years. When she became a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in 2007, she was only the second woman after Leila Seth to reach this feat. She is the only woman in the five-member constitutional bench hearing the petitions for repealing Section 377, and also the decades old petition on Sabarimala temple issues for the judgment on whether menstruating females should be allowed inside the temple or not. On 28th September 28, 2018 she was the only woman on bench, who dissented on Sabarimala issue, while the rest four males favoured the entry of women. The verdict came just one day after Supreme Court scrapped 158 year old Adultery Law under Section 497 IPC, and Indu favoured the move.

Indu Malhotra hails from Bangalore. She was born on 14 March 1956 to Om Prakash Malhotra, Senior Advocate in Supreme Court and distinguished author. She did her schooling from Carmel Convent School, New Delhi, and BA & MA in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi. She briefly worked as a lecturer before she completed her law studies from Delhi University. She started practising law since 1983, and enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi.

She qualified as Advocate-on-Record in the Supreme Court in 1988 on first rank and was appointed as the Standing Counsel for the State of Haryana in the Supreme Court in 1991. She served the position for 5 years. She represented various statutory corporations before Supreme Court. In 2007, she was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India, only the second woman to reach this position after long three decades. She has been appointed Amicus curiae by different benches of the Supreme Court and most recently she was appointed as an amicus for restoration of Jaipur as a heritage city. She assumed power as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 27 April 2018.
