Indrani Sen Biography

Indrani Sen is a Bengali singer associated with Nazrul geeti and Rabindra Sangeet. Indrani Sen is the daughter of singer Sumitra Sen, and the elder sister of Srabani Sen, known for her renditions in Bengali songs and Rabindra Sangeet. A prolific singer of Rabindra Sangeet, Indrani Sen is currently one of the leading singers of this genre at present. Indrani is also associated with playback singing in Bengali cinema and has won two BFJA Best Female Playback Awards. She received the award for the first time in 1993 for the film Shwet Patharer Thala and two years later for the film Sandhya Tara.

 

Indrani Sen hails from a musical family of Kolkata, West Bengal. Her mother Sumitra Sen is a well-known Bengali singer. Her younger sister Srabani Sen is also a prolific singer of Rabindra Sangeet. Following mother’s legacy, both the siblings decided to pursue a career in music, particularly Rabindra Sangeet, and they both received initial training from their mother. Later she continued her music training from Bengal Music College at the University of Calcutta. It was followed by rigorous training by Debabrata Biswas in classical and Purabi Dutta in Nazrul geeti.

 

After studies she started her professional career as a college lecturer in Kolkata, and has also served as the head of the department of economics at a college. Along with her teaching career, she has been regular with her live concerts in Nazrul geeti and Rabindra Sangeet. She also did playback singing for Bengali movies, though a few. She also sang for Hindi films and Bengali TV serials. Government of West Bengal honoured her with Banga Bhushan for her contributions towards the field of Bengali music.
