Indra Sinha Biography

Indra Sinha is a British writer of English and Indian descent. He was born in 1950 in Colaba, Mumbai. His Novel, "Animal's People", based on Bhopal disaster was the winner of the 2008 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Europe and South Asia and was also shortlisted for the 2007 Man Booker Prize. He has also translated many ancient Sanskrit texts into English. He has been voted one of the top ten British copywriters of all time. He is also known as a social worker related to the campaign of charity organization like Amnesty International and the Bhopal Medical Appeal. He wrote, "Animal's People", based on his long association working with the Bhopal survivors.

 

Sinha is the son of an Indian naval officer and an English writer. He was born in Mumbai in the year 1950. His education was done at Mayo College, Ajmer, Rajasthan; Oakham School, Rutland, England and Pembroke College, Cambridge in England. Currently he stays his wife in Sussex and the couple has 3 children. The Love Teachings of Kama Sutra, Tantra: The Search for Ecstasy, The Great Book of Tantra: Translations and Images from the Classic Indian Text, The Cybergypsies: a True Tale of Lust, War, and Betrayal on the Electronic Frontier and The Death of Mr Love are the books he published prior to his much acclaimed work – Animal’s people.

 

As a social worker, he has campaigned for justice for the victims of the Bhopal disaster since 1993. He created the first advertisement for the Bhopal Medical Appeal using the now-famous photograph by Raghu Rai of a dead child being buried. Through this campaign, he raised money to build a clinic to provide free treatment for the survivors. Formerly he worked as a copywriter for Ogilvy & Mather, London and Collett Dickenson Pearce & Partners, before becoming a full time writer.
