I S Johar Biography

I S Johar is one among the greatest comedians of Bollywood cinema. He has also done screenplay and direction of a few movies in which he has acted. He has given wonderful works during 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. His most memorable works are Shagird and Johny Mera Naam. Johar Mehmood In Goa is also a milestone movie of his career where he enact the role of himself with name ‘Johar’ along with another popular comedian of the industry – Mehmood, with same screen name itself.  The screen chemistry of same comedians was experimented once again with the movie, Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong, where they assumed their own names on screen.  Those two movies were scripted and directed by I S Johar. Another movie where he assigned his name as screen name is ‘Johar in Kashmir’. He has won Filmfare awards for best comedian for the movie – Johny mera naam. Famous director of Bollywood Yash Chopra started his film career as an assistant director with I. S. Johar.

As a comedian he was most busy in the industry during 60’s. His other movies are Teen deviyan, Pavitra paapi, Safar, Hum Sab Chor Hain, Harry black, Johar Mehmood In Goa, Main Wohi Hoon, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Maya, Chaddian Di Doli, Thrimurthi, Badhti ka naam daadhi, Gopichand Jassos, Pavitra Paapi, North West Frontier, Mr.India (1961), Johar in Kashmir, Death on the Nile, Ganga ki saugandh, Mazdoor Zindabaad, Nishabdi, Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai, Safar, Tangewala, banarasi babu and Premi gangaram.  He has also done many detective movies with comedy the main element.

He was born on 16 February 1920, in Talagang, British India. Though he works as comedian for movie, he has good education background. He holds MA degree in Economics and Politics, along with an LLB degree. Johar’s entry to movies was just co-incidential. Johar was visiting Patiala with his family for a wedding, when riots broke out during India Pakistan partition and he was not able to go back. Thereafter he worked in Jalandhar for a while and later moved to Mumbai and it resulted in his debut in Bollywood career. His debut movie was Ek thi ladki in 1949.
