Hrishikesh Kanitkar Biography

Hrishikesh Kanitkar is a former cricketer associated with Indian National team in the late 1990s. He is best remembered for scoring a four in the exciting Silver Jubilee Independence Cup final at Dhaka in 1998, against Pakistan when India required 3 runs to win from 2 balls. It is one of the best India-Pakistan matches witnessed ever. India successfully chased Pakistan's total of 314/5 creating a world record for the highest successful run chase in One Day International cricket, at a time when chasing total more than 300 runs was only a myth. The record was surpassed several times later. Yet the match is still remembered for the surprising 4 by a new comer Kanitkar, who became a star overnight.

His full name is Hrishikesh Hemant Kanitkar. He was born in Pune on 14 November 1974. He is son of former Indian wicket-keeper Hemant Kanitkar. He made his first class debut in the season 1994-1995, when he played Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. His outstanding career in the first class matches opened him doors to national selection. He made his ODI debut on December 7, 1997 against Sri Lanka and became a regular player of ODI matches, soon after his iconic shot in Silver Jubilee Independence Cup final at Dhaka in 1998, against Pakistan. In the tense situation he carried the last over with ease and when he hit boundary in the fifth ball of the final over, it became an outstanding victory in the history of India’s one-day international matches. As the opponent team was Pakistan in the finals, it was a great celebration for Indian fans.

But later he couldn’t sustain in the team too long. He toured Australia in December 1999. He played two tests against Australia in 1999-2000 series and played his last ODI in the same series. But he continued with domestic cricket and in 2012 he completed 100 Ranji Trophy matches. He announced his retirement in July 2015. Now he looks forward to continue his career as a cricket coach.
