Hiren Bhattacharyya Biography

Hiren Bhattacharyya was a popular poet of Assamese language. He is known as Hiruda among his fans. He has been also been named Prem aru Rodalir Kobi (Poet of Love and Sunshine). He received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 for his anthology of poems ‘Saichor Pathar Manuh'. Baharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award in 1993, Bishnu Rava Bota in 1958, Rajaji Puroskar 1985 awarded by Bharatiya Bidya Bhawan and Soviet Desh Neheru Bota, 1987 are other major honours received by him. Asom Upotyoka Sahitya Bota (Assam Valley Literary Award) was awarded by Megor Sikhya Nyash to him in the year 2000. He penned 11 collections of poetry and books on nursery rhymes.

Bhattacharyya was born in Jorhat of Assam on 28 July 1932. His father Tirthanath Bhattacharyya was a jailor. As a part of his father’s transfers he got opportunity to travel throughout Assam and it helped a lot in shaping his literary career. His main works are published in the form of poetry. Roudro Kamona (1968), Kobitar Rod (1976), Tomar Bahi, Xugondhi Pokhilaa (1981), Mor Desh aru Mor Premor Kobita (1972), Bibhinno Dinor Kobita, Shoichor Pothar Manuh (1991), Mur Prio Bornomala (1995), Bhalpuwar Buka Mati (1995) and Bhalpuwar Dikcou Batere (2000) are his anthologies of poems published. He has also published two collections of nursery rhymes in the year 1991 titled - Lora Dhemali and Akon Dhemali.

Ancient Gongs, (English Translation) and Jonaki Mon O Onyano etc. (Bengali Translation) are his translation works. Many of his poems have been turned into songs by renowned Assamese singers. His work - "Sugandhi Pokhila" has been translated to English titled, Fragrant Butterflies. He died on July 4, 2012 at Guwahati aged 79.
