Hima Das Biography

Hima Das is an Indian athlete and sprinter from Nagaon, Assam. On 2018 July 12th, she scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to win gold at Athletics Junior World Championships. She won gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships held at Tampere, Finland, clocking a time of 51.46 seconds. She stormed into the women’s 400m final as the fastest runner in the semifinals, one day before. 18 year old Hima Das broke a record to become the first Indian to get a gold in track events. She unsuccessfully participated in 2018 Commonwealth Games in both the 400 metres and the 4x400 metres relay.

 

Hima Das was born on 9 January 2000 in Nagaon, Assam. She belongs to Dhing village. Hima had first shown glimpses of her ability at the Federation Cup in March, where she ran 51.97 seconds. It helped her to win a place at upcoming common wealth games. She came to limelight in 2018 Common Wealth games, when she participated in both the 400 metres and the 4x400 metres relay. She got qualified to the finals in 400 metres, and managed to finish sixth in a time of 51.32 seconds. Though she couldn’t win any medal, her performance got noticed. The relay team which participated in the finals, finished only at 7th position.

 

After her historic win at IAAF 2018, Hima became only the fourth Indian ever to win a medal at the Under-20 World Championships and only the second to win a gold after Neeraj Chopra, who won the Javelin Throw at Bydgoszcz in 2016. She is also the first Indian track athlete to claim a medal in the history of this competition. Her personal best is 51.13 seconds, and she finished with gold in the event taking 51.46 seconds in the final.
