Hemant Soren Biography

Hemant Soren is an influential young politician from Jharkhand belonging to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha political party. He currently serves as the 5th Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Earlier he was a Deputy Chief Minister in the Arjun Munda ministry. He, born in 1975 is the youngest Chief Minister of a state in India. He took over the charge after the President’s rule during the period - 18 January 2013 to 12 July 2013. He is the son of influential politician and former chief minister of Jharkhand, Shibu Soren. He has also served as a member of Rajya Sabha for a brief period, from 24 June 2009 to 4 January 2010.

Soren was born in Nemara in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand as the son of Shibu Soren and Roopi in the year 1975. He has 3 siblings. He completed Intermediate from Patna High School, Patna and enrolled in BIT Mesra, Ranchi in Mechanical Engineering. But he discontinued his studies. In 2005 State Assembly elections, he got defeated by Stephen Marandi from Dumka constituency. But he won from the same constituency in 2009 and became a Cabinet minister.

The tribal leader formed new government in 2013 with support of 43 legislators belonging to Congress and RJD from the 82-member house. President’s rule was imposed on the state after the fall of BJP government headed by Arjun Munda. Munda lost power when JMM withdrew from the ruling coalition on January 8, 2013. Soren’s government is the ninth ministry in less than 13 years since Jharkhand was formed and the third government in the same house. Hemant Soren is married to Kalpana Soren and the couple has two sons.
