Hemanga Biswas Biography

Hemanga Biswas, also spelled as Hemang Biswas was an exponent of the Bengali folk music, also known by the name Loksangeet. He was born on 14, January 1912 in Assam. Hemanga Biswas-er Gaan and Shankhochil are his popular works. He has also sung a few film songs in Assamese. Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) and Komal Gandhar (1961) are among those popular movies in which he has rendered his voice. "Mashaal Jwaalo Mashaal Jwaalo" was a popular song composed by Biswas in the year 1944 on the eve of students' uprises in Assam. "Fulguli Kothaay Gyalo", “Oraa Aamaader Gaan Gaaite Dyay Naa”, “Bhedi Anoshana Mrityu Tushaar Tufaan” and “Aamra Karbo Jay” are other popular songs. He owns several popular Bengali songs in his credit.

 

Hemanga Biswas was known as a music composer as well as lyricist. He translated ‘The Internationale’, a widely sung left-wing anthem to Bengali. He settles his lyrics compactible with folk songs. Once, a debate occurred between Hemango Biswas and Salil Choudhury regarding the matter of translation of ideal art of people. But later he went on to compose mass songs with diverse experimentation. The debate in Bombay Conference dealt on aspect of people's culture, which was not explored till then, though the debate ended in personal accusations.

 

"We shall overcome” – a popular English song was translated to Hindi as ‘Hum honge kamyaap’. Its Bengali version, Amra Karbo Joy was translated by Hemanga Biswas and later re-recorded by Bhupen Hazarika. Ajadee Hoyni Tor, written & sung by Hemanga Biswas, represents the progressive movement in India. Negro bhai amar – though not written and composed by Biswas was later popularized by Hemanga Biswas' troop. He died on November 1987.
