Hema Sardesai Biography

“Awara bhawara jab hole hole gaaye” – This particular song of Sapne in A.R.Rehman’s composition placed Hema Sardesai in the top chart during 1997. When she sung with full enthusiasm for Kajol in the movie, original sung by Sujatha, people accepted her fresh voice. Though she was in the industry, only a few people know about her as a playback singer. Then she gave countless hit numbers for movies like Biwi No.1, Josh, Kunwara, Yaadein, Qhayamat, Asambhav, Khushi, Garama masala, Zor, Jaanam samjha karo, Soldier, Pardes, Mann, Aar ya paar, Chak de India, Mujhe meri biwi se bachao and Bahgban. She is the only Indian Singer to win Grand Prix at the 16th International Pop Song Festival in Germany. She won it in the year 1989. She is also famous for the live concert at Vijay Chawk in New Delhi during 50th Independence Day celebrations.  

 

Hema Sardesai was born in Mumbai, but she originally hails in Goa. As a singer, she started singing at the age of eight during Navarathri celebrations. She was fondly known as ‘Happy Go Lucky Girl’ among her friends and teachers, a name that she carries till now. As a female playback singer, she debut with Goonj in 1989, singing for Juhi Chawla. Yet it took a few years to bring her to limelight. In between she used to perform in live concerts and television shows. She has also released an album in the year 1999 titled Piya se milke aaye nain. It was a top seller that year. She is a particular playback singer who got opportunity along with top actors of Bollywood like Big B and Shah Rukh Khan. She sang ‘Apun bola’ opposite SRK in the year 2000 for the movie Josh and along with Amitabh Bachan, she sang Chali Chali Phir Chali Chali of the movie Baghban.

 

Her other popular songs include Kehna hai of Mann, Na hera na moti of Kunwara, Eli re eli of Yaadein, Tere sang of Zameen, Mein kudi anjaani hoon and Tere pyar mein of Zor, Jungle mein aadhi raat hai and Ishq chandi hai of Biwi No.1, Sona sona of Soldier and Hai re aayi Khushi of Khushi. Though she was a popular name in the second half of 1990’s, her name slowly faded away with the new millennium.
