Hem Barua Biography

Hem Barua is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern literary movement in Assam. Apart from being a poet, he was also known as a politician. Earlier he was a member of Indian National congress and in 1948 joined socialist party. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Gauhati in 1957 and 1962 and from Mangaldoi in 1967 and remained the member of the Lok Sabha till 1970. He was the President of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in its annual session held at Dhubri in 1972 and one of the pioneers in the modern literary movement of the state. He has won numerous honours and awards throughout his literary career.

 

Barua was born on the 22 April 1915, at Tezpur, Assam. He was a brilliant student in school and college studies. Barua obtained his M.A. degree from Calcutta University in 1938. In 1941, he joined J.B. College, Jorhat as a lecturer in Assamese and English languages. Next year in 1942, he quit his career and joined Quit India Movement, as a part of India’s struggle for freedom. He got imprisoned in 1943. Once got released he joined the B. Barua College, Guwahati as a lecturer and later became its principal.

 

His main works are Adhunik Sahitya (1948), Sagar Dekhicha? (1954), Balichanda (1959), San Mihali (1958), Cupid Aru Psyche (1959), Ranga Karabir Phul (1959), Kannaki (1960), Ei Git (1961), Idle Hours (1962), Assamese Literature (1962), Sahitya Aru Sahitya (1962), Achuphul (1964), Man Mayuri (1965), Bahagate Pati Jaon Biya (1969) and Smritir Papari (1970). Talxora, Dak Pokhili, The Red River & the Blue Hill and Mekong Noi Dekhilu are other published works. He died on 9 April 1977.
