Hasmukh Patel Biography

Hasmukh Patel was a legendary modernist architect from Gujarat best known for his contributions in the post-independent era of 20th century. He had more than 4 decades of experience in this field, and is best known for his contributions to contemporary architecture in India. He remained a prominent architect among his contemporaries. His son Bimal Patel is also a well-established architect from Gujarat at present times, whose prime interests are Architecture, urban design and urban planning. He also received Padma Shri award most recently in 2019, almost a year after the death of Hasmukh Patel in January 2018. As an architect he was based in Ahmedabad, where he founded a firm, HCPDPM.

 

Hasmukh Patel was born on 7 December 1933 in Bhadran, Gujarat. Chandubhai Rambhai Patel and Shantaben were his parents, and he had 5 siblings. His younger days were spent in Vadodara. His father was an engineer who ran a small construction business. He used to visit the business sites of his father, and slowly his work influenced him. Later he pursued graduation in Architecture at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He completed his Master's from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Patel started his own practice under the name of M/s Hasmukh C. Patel in the early 1960s, and within a short time span he established as a leading architect of the country.

 

His career expanded in the 1970s and ’80s and he also founded a firm, HCPDPM in Ahmedabad where he was settled in the later years. He gave shape to some of the iconic buildings of Ahmedabad. He designed 300 buildings, including landmarks such as the Patang Hotel, Reserve Bank of India, Refurbishment of Eden Gardens Stadium and Centre Point Apartments. He was an honorary director of School of Architecture, CEPT from 1972 to 1980 and Dean from 1976 to 1983. Under his administration, it became a premium educational institution. He passed away on 20 January 2018 aged 84.
