Harivansh Narayan Singh Biography

Harivansh Narayan Singh is an Indian politician and journalist from Uttar Pradesh. He currently serves as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, since 9 August 2018. He defeated Congress leader and four-term Rajya Sabha member, B. K. Hariprasad to become Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He is affiliated to Janata Dal (United). He holds Diploma in Journalism and has worked in several different media publications over the years before he turned an active politician. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2014, and has been serving in this position since then.

 

Harivansh Narayan Singh was born on 30 June 1956 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. His higher studies were completed from BHU, where he completed graduation and post-graduation in economics. After completing Diploma in Journalism, he worked as a journalist for many years. His professional career as a journalist began with The Times of India, and later he worked with different publications. When he joined Prabhat Khabar in 1989, it was on the verge to be declared as dead. Under his leadership its popularity scaled up and became a leading daily of India. The sensational Fodder Scam was published in this newspaper, when Singh was associated with it.

 

He joined Rajya Sabha for the first time in 2014. He was nominated by Bihar for the political party, Janata Dal (United). In 2018 he succeeded P. J. Kurien as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He received 125 against 105 votes for B. K. Hariprasad to become Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. It was after a long wait of 40 years, a non-Congress candidate got elected to this post.
