Hari Krishan Jain Biography

Hari Krishan Jain is an Indian cytogeneticist and plant breeder from Haryana, who works in the fields of genetic recombination and the control of inter-chromosome level. For his contributions towards the field of science, he was honoured with fourth highest civilian Padma Shri by government of India in 1981. He is also a recipient of many other honours related to science - Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Norman Bourlaug Award, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award, 1973 Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship,1999 National Academy of Agricultural Sciences Dr. B. P. Pal Award and many more. He was the first recipient of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award in 1967 while he was associated with Indian Agriculture Research Institute.

Hari Krishan Jain was born on 28 May 1930 in a Jain family in Gurgaon, Haryana. Chameli Devi and Nemi Chand Jain were his parents. He graduated in Botany from University of Delhi in 1949 and secured an associate-ship from the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) in 1951. He also completed his doctoral studies Aberystwyth campus of the University College of Wales. Once he returned to India, he joined IARI as a cytologist in 1956. He stayed with this organization till his superannuation from service as its Director in 1983. While he was associated with IARI, he spearheaded many research works in India, related to the fields of genetic recombination and the control of inter-chromosome level.

While at IARI, he and his team worked on the cytological mechanisms of genetic recombination, on Delphinium. His work contributed to the development of a protocol for controlling the interchromosome level, and the research works were later continued by others. His works on tomato and Drosophila helped in the discovery of chemical mutagen specificity. He published his research works as books - Genetics: Principles, Concepts and Implications; Green Revolution: History, Impact and Future; Plant Breeding: Mendelian to Molecular Approaches; Indian Agriculture in 2000 AD etc.
