Harbhajan Singh Biography

Harbhajan Singh Plaha, born 3 July 1980 in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, commonly known as Harbhajan Singh, is an Indian international cricketer, who plays all forms of the game cricket. A specialist spin bowler, he has the second-highest number of Test wickets by an off spinner, behind Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan.


He received Padma Shri award in 2009 from Government of India. He is the first Indian bowler to take a hat trick in Test cricket. He was not in the team during 2007 Cricket World Cup and though joined again was given a ban by the ICC for vilifying Andrew Symonds racially. Again he was banned from 2008 IPL by BCCI for slapping Sreesanth after a match.

 

He was born in a Punjabi Ramgarhia Sikh family. He is the only son of Sardar Sardev Singh. He has five sisters. His first coach was Charanjit Singh Bhullar who trained him as a batsman. But after the death of his coach, he got his training as a bowler under Davinder Arora. When his father died in 2000, he had to take care of his family and organize marriage for his three sisters. His Test debut was on 25th March 1998 against Australia and his ODI debut was on 17th April 1998 against New Zealand. He is playing for the Mumbai Indians team in IPL.

 

He started to play for the Punjab Under-16 at the age of 15. In 1996, he started to play for Punjab Under-19 team and made his first class cricket debut in 1997 against Services in the Ranji Season 1997-98. He was selected for the Australia tour in 1999-2000 as the second spinner. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he played for Indian team against Australia and could get three quick wickets and reduced Australia to 99 for 5. However Australia won in this match. In the second match against Australia, he got the wickets of Ricky Ponting, Gilchrist and Shane Warne in successive balls to get the first Indian Test hat-trick.

 

He was suffering from his finger injury for sometimes in 2003. He represented India in the Asia Cup in July 2004 and he took 4 wickets in four matches. He played in the first match of 2007 Cricket World Cup and later he was dropped in favor of Kumble. He also took part in the ICC World Twenty 20 tournament in South Africa in September 2007. He has got Man of the Match award five times and Man of the Series award twice.

 

Harbhajan Singh married his longtime girlfriend, actress Geeta Basra, on 29 October 2015 in Jalandhar. They have a daughter, Hinaya Heer Plaha, born on July 27, 2016 in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
