Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi Biography

Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi was an Indian classical dancer who practises in Manipuri dance and musician. She was awarded Padma Shri 2010, Government of Assam Birangana, Government of Manipur Gold, Medal, Manipur State Kala Akademi Award, Nirtya Bhushan Award and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contributions towards the field of art. She lived during the period, 1 August 1924 – 12 June 2014. She expertise in Lai Haraoba and Raas forms of Manipuri dance.

 

Haobam Ongi Ngangbi Devi was born on 1 August 1924 in Uripok Bachaspati Leikai, Imphal of present-day Manipur state. She has learned Manipuri dance and music from the age of five from Manipuri Sangeertan Sangh and also learnt classical music from Ustad Meisnam Bidhu Singh and Chingakham Radhacharan Singh. In 1948 when Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy was established, she was appointed as a member in the departments of dance and music.

 

Devi was known as the first classical singer from Manipur. She started recording at All India Radio and also sang playback for Mainu Pemcha. She was reported to have researched on Lai Haraoba and is preparing a syllabus for the institution. During the period from 1936 to 1945 she has worked as an actress for the Manipur Dramatic Union, Rupmahal Theatre and Aryan Theatre.

 

During her active years she has participated in various national and international festivals such as the Republic Day Folk Dance Festival, National Dance Festival and Inter State Cultural Exchange Programs. She had continued her work at the JNM Dance Academy where she became the Head of the Department of Folk and Community Dance in 1966. She held the post of the vice principal of the Academy at the time of her retirement in 1985.
