Hans Ji Maharaj Biography

Hans Ji Maharaj was a spiritual leader and Satguru from Haridwar. His real name is Hans Ram Singh Rawat and he was fondly called "Shri Maharaji" or just "Guru Maharaji” by his disciples. His spiritual activities were concentrated in Haridwar. He was the founder of the Divine Light Mission (DLM) in 1960 and now its activities are carried across the globe by his fourth and youngest son, Guru Maharaj Prem Rawat. His son Satpal Maharaj is also associated with his spiritual activities and also a leading politician of the country, currently associated with BJP.

Hans Ram Singh Rawat was born on 8 November 1900 in Gadh-ki-Sedhia of present-day Uttarakhand. He lost his mother at a young age and later he was brought up by his aunt. During adult stage, he travelled across many holy places and met many holy men and was also leaned towards Ary Samaj, which stood against discrimination based on caste system. He married twice and had one daughter from first marriage and four sons from second. His second wife Rajeshwari Devi got associated with his spiritual journey and was fondly called Mataji by their followers.

He came into contact with Sri Swarupanand Ji who believed in the principle of Adwaida. Sri Swarupanand Ji taught him the techniques of Knowledge or kriyas and in the next 10 years Hans Ji Maharaj travelled across North India. His spiritual guru passed away in 1936. As he had the status of a "householder", he was not accepted as the successor of his guru. So Hans Ram Singh Rawat continued his spiritual journey by his own means.

For 30 years he preached his message without any formal organisation.  He founded the Divine Light Mission (DLM) in 1960, which is quite popular across West at present. He also took initiatives such as publishing of a monthly magazine named Hansadesh in 1951. On 18 July 1966, while visiting a small ashram in Alwar, Sri Hans fell ill. He died on his way to his home the next day early morning. He was aged 65.
