Halwa Vasu Biography

Halwa Vasu was a popular comedian and character artist associated with Tamil film industry. This actor appeared in around 900 films in brief roles. Yet he owns only lesser number of meaty roles throughout his career journey. “Halwa” tag got added to his real name, Vasu after the film Amaidhi Padai, in which his character brings halwa which is adulterated with chloroform. He starred in many Tamil films as a comedian and his performance in Amaithipadai was one among the notable films. He had shared screen space with many famous comedians, including Vadivelu for some of the iconic and memorable comedy scenes. He died at his residence on 17 August 2017 following liver failure. Vasu was unwell for some months and suffered from renal-related ailments.

He was born and brought up in Madhurai, Tamil Nadu. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree. Vazhkai Sakkaram was his debut Tamil film, where he was seen in a bit role. After that he appeared in numerous films as a junior artist doing small roles of less significance. Vasu also worked as an assistant to director-actor Manivannan during early 1990s. The political thriller - Amaidhi Padai in 1994 aside Sathyaraj brought him to prominence. His role was short, but it was enough to change the destiny of this actor who has been struggling in the industry for many years.

In the cult classic political thriller Amaidhi Padai, he appeared in a brief role as a person who brings halwa sweet mixed with a narcotic substance. The scene was an instant hit, and since then he came to be known by the name Halwa Vasu. He was seen in many movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a part of Vadivelu’s comedy troupe. In his last release, Visaranai, he was seen in a serious role.
