Hakim Rawther Biography

Hakim Rawther was an actor and director of Malayalam cinema. He is known for his directional debut The Guard (2001), the first Malayalam movie to feature only a single actor and the role was played by Kalabhavan Mani. He played the role of Appukkuttan Nair, a forest guard in a lonely, isolated dense forest. Yaadein (Hindi, 1964), The Last Letter (French, 2002) and Shanti (Kannada, 2004) are a few more films belonging to this category, where only one actor appeared onscreen.

 

His association with film industry began in the early 1990s as a character artist. He played the role of a mental patient in the cult classic – Mookkilla rajyathu, released in 1991. Hakim has also played character roles in a few Malayalam movies. A few of such notable roles include - "Johnnie Walker", "Paithrukam", "Manthramothiram", "Thilakkam", "Vettam", "Kazhcha", "Rasikan", "Orma Mathram", "Naayika" and many more. He played character roles in many of Jayaraj movies. Nayaka released in 2011 was his last release, in which he played the role of a cameraman. He passed away on 5 September 2013 at Kottayam Medical College following a cerebral hemorrhage.

 

Hakim hailed from Karapuzha, Kottayam, Kerala. He was a mimicry artist who worked with the mimicry troupe Kalabhavan Kochi, before entering Malayalam cinema. He accompanied singer K. J. Yesudas as a session mimicry artist for about 10 years till his film debut in the early 1990s. He was married to Devi Menon, a Ghazal singer and composer. His debut movie as a director, The Guard (2001) was discussed for its unique characterization. Apart from a single actor, animals form a part of the movie.
