Hakeem Noor-ud-din Biography

Hakeem Noor-ud-Din was a religious leader belonging to Islam and the first caliph the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, founded by his close companion Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in the late 19th century. It was the reinstatement of the absolute oneness of God and the revival of Islam through the moral reformation of society along Islamic principles. Following Hakeem Noor-ud-Din’s death, it was followed by Mirza Basheer-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad, the elder son of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Hakeem Noor-ud-Din lived during the period, 1841 – 13 March 1914, and he also gained reputation as a renowned physician, writer, theologian, and an expert in Arabic and Hebrew.

 

Hakeem Noor-ud-Din was born in 1841 in Bhera, Sikh Empire. He was a royal physician to the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir for many years. He also extensively travelled to foreign countries including the pilgrim place Mecca. He was the first person to give bay'ah to Ghulam Ahmad in 1889, and fully supported him in the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam. He remained a close confidant and associative of the founder. He was chosen as his first successor of Ghulam Ahmad on 27 May 1908, a day after his death. In fact he was unanimously chosen as his successor.

 

Under his leadership, Ahmadiyya movement began to organise missionary activity with small groups of Ahmadis in different parts of the country and other parts of the world. The first Islamic mission in England was established in 1913 and translation of Quran to English also began. He had two wives - Fatima Sahiba and Sughra Begum, and 7 children. His lectures on Quranic exegesis and Hadith gained a lot of popularity and followers. Muhammad Ali and Sher Ali were among his prominent students.
