  • During his lifetime he won many awards, including the Padma Shri in 1983, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969, Kalidas Samman 1990, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1996, and the Padma Bhushan in 2002. His play 'Charandas Chor' (Charandas, The Thief) got him the Fringe Firsts Award at Edinburgh International Drama Festival in 1982, and in 2007.

Habib Tanvir Biography

Habib Tanvir was a playwright, theatre director, poet and actor who concentrated most on Urdu and Hindi. Agra Bazar (1954) and Charandas Chor (1975) are his most popular playwrights. He is most known for his work with Chhattisgarhi tribal, at the Naya Theatre, Bhopal established by him in the year 1959. Gaon ka Naam Sasural, Charandas Chor, Mor Naam Damad and Kamdeo ka Apna Basant Ritu ka Sapna are other noted works. According to him, real artists exist in villages. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969, Padma Shri in 1983, Kalidas Samman in 1990, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1996, and Padma Bhushan in 2002 are the important honours received by him.

 

Tanvir was born in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. He completed his schooling from Laurie Municipal High School, Raipur. He completed his B.A. from Morris College, Nagpur in 1944 and enrolled in Aligarh Muslim University to do M.A. From a younger age, he used to write poems with the pen name, Takhalluz. In 1945, he moved to Mumbai and joined AIR as a producer. He also joined the Progressive Writers' Association and later, Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) as an actor. In 1954, he moved to Delhi and worked with Hindustani Theatre and children’s theatre.

 

Important plays of Tanvir include - Agra Bazar (1954), Shatranj Ke Mohrey (1954), Mitti ki Gaadi (1958), Gaon ke naon Sasural, mor naon Damand (1973), Uttar Ram Charitra (1977), Ek Aurat Hypathia bhi Thee (1980), Kamdeo ka Apna Basant Ritu ka Sapna (1993) and The Broken Bridge (1995). In 1955, he moved to England and trained in Acting at Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School one year later. In 1958, he returned back to India and became a full time director. 'Naya Theatre' was found in the year 1959 and contributed a lot to Indian theatre through his prolific works.
