Guru Har Rai Biography

Guru Har Rai, born on 16 January 1630 was the 7th of Sikh Gurus. He became Guru on 8 March 1644 becoming the successor of his grandfather. He was succeeded by his five year old younger son, Guru Har Krishan on 7 October 1661 and Rai passed away at a younger age of 31. He has visited the Doaba and Malva regions of Punjab where he preached to the Sikhs in big huge numbers

 

Guru Har Rai Sahib was born as the son of Baba Gurdita and Mata Nihal Kaur on January 16, 1630 in Punjab. He was married Mata Kishan Kaur, the daughter of Sri Daya Ram. She is also referred to as Mata Sulakhni. The couple had two sons - Baba Ram Rai and Guru Harkrishan. . As Ram was in collusion with the Mughal Empire, Guru Har Rai chose his younger son as his predecessor. When Har Rai died in March 1664, Har Krishan succeeded his father at the age of 5. According to Guru Har Rai, Har Kishan was soft hearted than his elder brother though both used to recite the same bani and followed the same religion. Thus Guru Har Rai preferred his younger son to elder son. 

 

Guru Har Rai was a man of peace. Yet he never left the tradition of armed Sikh Warriors, who earlier were maintained by his grandfather and always boosted the military spirit of the Sikhs. But he never interfered into the political matters of Mughal Empire then. The Guru also established an Ayurvedic hospital and a research center at Kiratpur Sahib. He also maintained a zoo in association to it. Once he had cured Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Shah Jahan using some medicinal herbs available at his Ayurvedic Medical Center.
