Gurbux Singh Biography

Gurbux Singh is an Indian hockey player who was a member of national team. He was a team member which won gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics and Bronze at 1968 Mexico Olympics. He was the Joint Captain at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games, where India finished with a Bronze medal. As of now Gurbux has served the Indian Hockey for over 50 years in different roles. He coached Indian team for the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Gurbux was honoured with Arjuna Award in the year 1966. Singh excelled as a successful player in domestic hockey.

 

Gurbux Singh was born on February 11, 1936 at Peshawar. He was brought up in Rawalpindi in the undivided India. After the partition, the family first moved over to Lucknow and later got settled in Meerut. In 1957 he got permanently shifted to Kolkata. Gurbux Singh played badminton during his early days, before he finally settled with the game of hockey. He started playing the game while at Lucknow at the age of 16. He represented Agra University in 1954–55, played in the East Bengal Club in 1957, Calcutta Customs from 1957 to 1965, and Mohun Bagan from 1968 to 1980.

 

Singh made his international debut in a tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1960. Since then he played as a skilled full-back player for national team. He had a glorious career in the 1960s, captaining his team to many victories as well, and he was a member of Indian team which won gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics. He retired in 1968, and continued as a coach and umpire. West Bengal government honoured him with ‘Banga Bibhushan’ in 2013.
