Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon Biography

Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon was a military officer in the Indian National Army (INA), who also got associated with India’s freedom struggle movement. He was one among those three soldiers who faced Red Fort Trial in 1944. He also played an important role in the Indian independence negotiations. He was awarded Padma Bhushan on 12 April 1998 for his outstanding service to his country and one year prior to it Indian Postal Department issued a stamp, in memory of Dhillon’s contribution to the liberation of India. From my Bones - is his autobiography work. He died on 6 February 2006 in Gwalior.

 

A close associative of Netaji Subhash Chandra Boss in INA, he was one among the three soldiers who were tried and sentenced to death in a public court-martial carried out by the British Indian Army, accusing of treason during World War II, for "waging war against the King Emperor of Delhi”. The other two members of INA were Shah Nawaz Khan and Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon and the news gained much attention from media and public. However they were defended by a group of Indian leaders and lawyers including Jawaharlal Nehru and Bhulabhai Desai, and their sentence was reduced to cashiering by the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.

 

Dhillon was born at Algon on 18 March 1914. His father was a veterinary surgeon. He got married to Basant Kaur at the age of 14. She died in 1968. The couple had three children. He graduated from Dayanand Anglo Vernacular High School, Montgomery in 1931 and worked for a brief term as a teacher. After failing F.Sc Exams at Punjab University in 1933 to join medicine, a friend suggested him to join as Sipoy for Indian Army. Thus he joined Training Battalion of the 10/14th Punjab Regiment on 29 May 1933 and completed training in 1934. As a soldier he also served during World War Second. But later he joined INA, under the deep influence of Subhash Chandra Bose. After Indian Independence, he also played an important role in the Indian independence negotiations.
