Gummadi Venkateswara Rao Biography

Gummadi Venkateswara Rao was a veteran character artist of Telugu cinema. He is a recipient of Raghupathi Venkaiah Award, Andhra Pradesh state's highest award in cinema given to a cine artist for his overall contributions to Telugu film industry. He has appeared in around 500 Telugu movies in a career spanning to more than 55 years. He received Nandi award for best supporting actor for 1982 movie - Maro Malupu. His first movie, Adrushta Deepudu was released in 1950 and 2008 movie Jagadguru Sri Kasinayana Charitra was his last appearance. He passed away on 26 January 2010 aged 82.

 

He was born in Ravikampadu, Guntur District in 1928. He studied in Hindu College Guntur. His film career began in 1950 with the movie Adrushta Deepudu and he has acted with three generation of Telugu actors in a career spanning to about 6 decades. He didn’t hesitate to play uncle and father roles to actors older than him. Since young he accepted matured character roles of father, uncle etc. He has also played hero, villain and comic roles onscreen. Thodu Dongalu (1954) and Mahamantri Timmarusu (1962) alongside NTR are his most memorable films during his younger ages. Missamma (1955) was noted for his bit comic role.

 

For the memorable role he played in Mahamantri Timmarusu, he was given an honorary doctorate by Telugu University in 1963. As a character artist, his most noted appearances include Jyothy, Nelavanka, Maya Bazar, Maa Inti Mahalakshmi, Kula Daivam, Pelli Pusthakam, Kula Gothralu, Maro Malupu, Ekalavya, Gaaju Bommalu and Ee Charitra Ye Siraatho? He has also served as a jury member of National awards and Nandi awards several times.
