Gulshan Rai Biography

Gulshan Rai was a leading film producer of Bollywood. He established Trimurti Films, one of the leading film production companies in the year 1970. Johny Mere Naam, starring Dev Anand and Hema Malini was the first film produced by this company which emerged as super hit. The movies which placed Amitabh Bachchan as the second superstar of Bollywood, Deewar and Trishul were also produced by him. Other noted films produced by this banner include – Gupt, Yudh, Tridev, Mohra and Viswatma, all directed by his son Rajiv Rai. Kalyanji Anandji’s music was another specialty of Rai films, particularly in the 1980’s. Yudh happened to be the directorial debut of Rajiv Rai too. Trimurthi Films has released 180 films till now, of which 40 became silver jubilee hits. Other hits include – Joshiley, Yudh and Vidaata.

 

Gulshan Rai was born and educated in Lahore. He came to Mumbai in the year 1947, dreaming about cinema. He started his career as a distributor in the year 1951. He was not a serious person and was always seen cracking jokes with actors and production team. He was never too serious with his film failures as well. But he always kept himself away from film sets. Johny Mera Naam – the first movie under his production was a record breaking film and it established Hema Malini as the top actress of 1970’s.

  
He has produced numerous movies for director Yash Chopra. Their association has always been success. Amitabh was the hero of both the top blockbuster hits – Deewar and Trishul. Their association has always been always noted in Bollywood. Gupt – The suspense thriller remains one of the greatest hits of late 1990’s. But since 2000’s, Trimurthi films faced failures one after the other. It tried to launch actor Arjun Rampal in two movies – Pyar Ishq aur Mohabbat and Asambhav. It was also anticipated that he is next to Hritik Roshan. But both these movies failed at box office. Gulshan Rai died on 11 October 2004 aged 80.
