Gul Bahar Singh Biography

Gul Bahar Singh is a highly talented filmmaker best known for offbeat films, tele films and documentary films. He is a six-time National award winner and he won three of them for his documentaries, Anukaran (1986), Biotechnology: Some possibility (1992) and Gotipua (1999). He won National award for his short films – Bheet (1997) and Dhatri Panna (2003). In 1999, he also won Certificate of Participation for his feature film, Sundari and also for The Goal (2000) in feature film category. Abaidha (2003) is yet another acclaimed work in feature film category which won Certificate of Participation at Montreal film festival.

 

He has done featured films in Bengali and Hindi language and is known for picking themes close to reality. In Bollywood, he is best known for directing 2017 movie, Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi starring Vinod Khanna and Hema Malini. The movie was a biopic of Vijaya Raje Scindia. It was originally completed in 2010 and held for 7 long years. The movie gained limelight soon after release because it was the last movie of charming star of Bollywood, Vinod Khanna, who passed away just one week after its theatric release.

 

He was born in Pakur, Jharkhand. He is a self-trained filmmaker who marked his entry to documentary film making in 1980 with his first documentary "Weeds" based on street children. In 1986 his documentary film Anukaran, earned him his first documentary film award. After that he received 5 more National awards, pre-dominantly in documentary films. His documentary film based on Hindi writer Munshi Premchand starring Irrfan Khan as Premchand is one of his best works. He also made Hindi feature film, The Goal starring the same actor, and the movie won National award for best children’s film and also received special Jury award at Cairo International Children's Film Festival held in Egypt, and special mention at International Federation of Film Societies in 2001 in Czech Republic. Most of his films were screened in international film award across India and abroad.
