Gujarmal Modi Biography

Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi born on August 9, 1902, was a well known industrialist and a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others. He used to donate generously especially to needy ones and religious cause. He was the main force behind the establishing Modi Group of companies and was father founder of the industrial city of Modinagar in 1933. His brother Kedar Nath Modi was always with him in his efforts to bring Modinagar on the map of industrial city of India. RB Gujarmal Modi married Dayawati Modi in 1932.

 

Gujarmal Modi established schools and colleges at his birthplace, Mahendragarh, in Patiala, Meerut a nearby town and in Modinagar, a town he established in district Ghaziabad (then Modinagar came under Meerut District). GM Modi contributed generously in the field of education and helped establishing various institutes including BHU. GM Modi helped financially to the  different colleges in Meerut and various other places.

 

Gujarmal Modi born as Ram Prasad Modi on 9 August 1902, in Mahendragarh in Punjab (now Mahendragarh is in Haryana state), in the family of Multani Mal Modi and Chandi Devi, but his mother died when he was only a six days old toddler. His father married again for the third time with Gujri Devi, who gave him the name of Gujarmal. In 1968 GM Modi was awarded the Padma Bhushan by Indian Government for his social activities and development of industry. 

 

GM Modi was in the field of Sugar mills, food products, vegetable oils, Washing soap, Toilet soap factory, tin factory, Biscuit manufacturing, confectionary, Paints and varnish, Oil, Torch,  Steel factory, Textile, Flour mill, Flour mill, Spinning,  Thread, Distillery, Synthetic yarn and Rubber (tire).

 

GM Modi was father of five sons and two daughters all of whom are doing well in their lives. It will be interesting to note that GM Modi is grandfather of Lalit Modi, son of Krishan Kumar Modi the eldest son of GM Modi. Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi died on January 22, 1976, in Modinagar at the age of 74. There are number of schools, colleges, temples, hospitals and other charitable institutes in the name of Modi family members.
