Gracy Singh Biography

Gracy Singh is known as a village girl for her performance in Ashuthosh Gowarikar’s Lagaan, opposite Aamir Khan in the year 2001. Though she has done a few movies like sar utha ke jiyo, Hum aapke dil mein rehte hain and Hut u tu, she is credited with ‘Lagaan’ as her debut movie. It’s the first movie, where she was casted as heroine. Following the success of Lagaan, she did the superhit movie ‘Santhosham’ in Telugu too.

Though her performance in Lagaan was praised by critics a lot, most of them admitted the fact that ‘her looks never fits a modern actress and she may get only village girl roles’. But through her make over and acting skills, she proved it false through the movies Armaan and Munnabhai MBBS. In Armaan, she appeared as a simple girl with modern looks while she did the role of a doctor in Munnabhai MBBS. The debut movie of Rajkumar Hirani as a director was a super hit comedy, the best grosser of 2003 too. Her performance as Chinki was also well appreciated. Yet, she couldn’t win much opportunity in Bollywood. Before Munnabhai MBBS, she did Gangajal opposite Ajay Devgan. In this movie, she was casted as a house wife – wife of Ajay Devgan.

She did a few more films in Bollywood like Muskaan – opposite Aftab Shivdesani, Shart – the challenge – opposite Tushaar Kapoor, Wajah – a reason to kill and yeh hai zindagi. But all these movies bombed at the box office. It can be said that her films became hit only when she was casted against big stars of Bollywood. Though she did a commendable job, her work went unnoticed due to the presence of big stars and themes selected.

In between she did a few south movies as well as Punjabi movies. Loud speaker – Malayalam opposite Mammootty was one among the best which got critical appreciation as well. Many of her projects were stopped in the middle and she did a cameo role in a few movies also. Most recently we saw her doing the role of Maharani Meerabhai, adorer of Lord Krishna in the movie ‘Dangerous Ishq’. Though her role was simple, she looked nice on screen. A few movies are under production. Let us hope, she gets success what she actually deserves!
