Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar Biography

Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar was a popular writer of Kannada language known for his satire works. He was fondly called Goruru by his fans. Goruru Ramaswami Iyengar was born at "Goruru" in Hassan district of Karnataka in the year 1904. He died in 1991 aged 87 and in the year 2005, his birth centenary was widely celebrated. In the year 1979, his satire travelogue - "Amerikadalli Goruru" fetched him Kendra Sahitya Academy award. His noted literary works are Rasaphala, Namma Oorina Rasikaru, Putta mallige, Hemavathi and Garudagambada Dasayya.

Ramaswami Iyengar was born in a small village, Goruru of Karnataka and later the place name was added to his name. He was fondly called Goruru as well. During his young days, he was influenced by Gandhi and Indian freedom struggle movement a lot. He participated in Quit India Movement in the year 1942. He was arrested and jailed for two months by British government then. His son Ramachandra became a martyr of freedom struggle movement in 1947. After Indian independence in 1947, Goruru worked in the Khadi Board Industries.

As a writer, his writings started in late 1920’s and the first noted work, Halliya Chitragalu was published in the year 1930, followed by Namma Oorina rasikaru two years later. These two books are regarded as the celebrated works of this great litterer. As a writer, he was fascinated by satire thoughts and they well reflected in his works too. His satire work, based on his visit to America, "Amerikadalli Goruru" won him Kendra Sahitya Academy award for the year 1979. His short story Bhootayyana Maga Ayyu, based on true events became a feature film later, directed by Siddhalingaiah in 1975. Other works which were made to films later include – Hemavati and Urvasi.
