Gopulu Biography

Gopulu is a noted cartoonist and illustrator from Tamil Nadu, known for his long term association with Tamil humour magazine Ananda Vikatan. His cartoons are very popular. He was honoured with ‘Kalaimamani' award by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1991. Murasoli Award and the M. A. Chidambaram Chettiar Award are the other major honours received by him.

He was born in Tanjore in 1924 and completed his studies at Kumbakonam School of Art. In 1941, he came to Chennai at the age of only 17 as a student who wanted to learn more about art. He met the legendary artist Maali of Ananda Vikatan, who was greatly impressed by his cartoons and offered him a job. His first assignment was to draw a few illustrations for Deepavali Malar. ‘Rama Pattabishekam' was his first illustration, thus beginning his association with Ananda Viketan at the age of 17. He stayed in Purasaiwalkam with a group of friends and also did art work for private publishers to earn a living. His whole month was spent on just rupees seven. Though he couldn’t save much from his earnings, it was enough to live in Chennai in the early 1940’s.

He got his permanent job in Ananda Vikatan in 1944 and he joined in 1945 with a monthly salary of 100 rupees. He continued his association with the magazine for more than 20 years till 1968. Apart from political cartoons, he also did cover designs and illustrated columns for the magazine. Around 1956, he moved from Mylapore to R.A. Puram and is staying there for more than 50 years. He has also worked as the illustrator of serials - Thillana Mohanambal and Washingtonil Thirumanam.
