Gopi Krishna (yogi) Biography

Pandit Gopi Krishna was a popular yogi, writer and spiritual guru from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He was also known as a mystic, teacher and social reformer. He authored his autobiography titled Kundalini: The Evolutionary Energy in Man. Published in 1967, it was his first major publication in India. The book was first published in Great Britain and the United States and later translated to 11 major languages, which accounted his journey of the phenomenon of the forceful awakening of Kundalini. He authored 17 books in total. He is known for his social services in the uplift of women and women empowerment.

 

Gopi Krishna was born in 1903 near Srinagar. Later he moved to Lahore and returned back to his hometown at the age of 22. He got married and was a family man, worked in government service too. He got attached to social services and became a leader of an organization with dealt with majorly with the well-being and rights of women. He reported to have experienced the sudden and forceful awakening of Kundalini, while meditating one morning. He was 34 years then. This experience radically altered the path of his life which he was travelling till then. It triggered a transformative process that lasted for twelve years.

 

During his life time he authored 17 books on Higher Consciousness, and was active with his thoughts and writings till his death in 1984. But he has always credited his works to be an inspiration from a strong force. He advocated women’s rights throughout his life and he supported equality of men and women. He also worked for the betterment of conditions of widows in the society. He was one among the first to popularize the concept of Kundalini among Western readers. He passed away in 1984.
