Gopal Rath Biography

Gopal Rath was a popular Odia poet and writer. He is best known for his poetry collection Bipula Diganta, which won Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for Odia literature in 2014. His works were mostly poetry collections. He authored six anthologies of poems. Apart from Bipula Diganta, he authored Ekla Manisha, Kete dura, Kuni Pua O Nishpaapa Sakaala, Bihwala Belabhoomi and Aruna Udbhaasa. Jhankar Poetry Award 1984, Odisha Sahitya Akademi award in 2003, Sahitya Pruthvi Samman in 2012 and Baldev Sahitya Sansad Samman in 2007 are the other major honours received by him. He passed away on 30 December 2016 in Pune, aged 71. Rath, along with his wife renounced material world and became sanyasis in 2014, two years prior to his death.


Rath was born in Sambalpur, Odisha on 3 August 1945. His birth name is Gopal Krishna Rath. His wife, Dr. Kiranbala Rath is an academician, author and an orator. His childhood and younger days were spent in his hometown, where he completed his schooling and law studies as well. He started his career as a judge. But later he switched to teaching field, a profession he carried out till his retirement as a Professor in Law from Sambalpur University. He taught law at college. He served as a member of Sahitya Akademi advisory board and also Chairman of the PG Council of Sambalpur University.


Rath began his literal writings at a very young age, since his school days. In those days, he published his poetry works in magazines. Later he published his works as 6 anthologies. A professor of law and poet, he lived in Bhuvaneswar, where he published his books. For his contribution to Odia language and literature, Rath has already been honoured with the Odisha Sahitya Akademi award for 2003-2004. He was also a recipient of Jhankar Kabita Samman in 1984. He passed away on 30 December 2016. He was suffering from prolonged heart illness.


He has suffered some personal losses in his life. He lost his little daughter some years back. His engineer son died untimely by bone cancer. His other son and daughter-in-law died in an accident just a few months before his death, leaving behind two teen kids.
