Gita Ghatak Biography

Gita Ghatak was an actress and singer from Lucknow, UP, who lived during the period, 1931-2009. She is best known as an exponent of Rabindra Sangeet, and she has also done supporting roles in a few Bengali movies in the classic era of late 1950s, and also in the 2000s, towards the latter half of her life. Her younger Rita Ganguly is a professor, vocalist, dancer and a disciple of legendary Ghazal singer Begum Akhtar, and both the siblings left a mark in the field of Rabindra Sangeet, after learning together. Gita was married to Anish Ghatak, nephew of famous director Ritwik Ghatak. Bollywood actress Meghna Kothari, a noted film actress, is her niece. Her sister Rita has played a brief role of 2005 Bollywood film, Parineeta.

 

Gita’s maiden name is Gita Ganguly. She was born on 23 January 1931 in Lucknow, UP. Her father K. L. Ganguly, a journalist was the first editor of the National Herald, a newspaper founded by Nehru. He was a congress leader and freedom fighter too. Gita spent her childhood days in Lucknow, where her father worked in National Herald as an editor. She along with her sister Rita Ganguly joined Viswabharati, where they continued with their studies. The sisters studied Rabindra Sangeet, and later earned fame in this field.

 

Gita also made brief appearances in Bengali movies. She has been a part of famous Bengali movies of late-1950s - Meghe Dhaka Tara and Bari Theke Paliye. She also appeared in Ekti Nadir Naam and Beyond Borders, after year 2000. She spent her last years in Kolkata. She passed away on 17 November 2009.
