Girish Tiwari Biography

Girish Tiwari was a writer, director, screenwriter, lyricist, journalist and singer-poet from Uttarakhand. He was also known as a social activist. “Andha Yug”, “Andher Nagri”, “Thank you Mr. Glad” and “Bharat Durdasha” are the famous plays directed by Girish. “Nagare Khamosh Hain” and “Dhanush Yagya” are his noted playwrights. He has served as the editor of “Shikharon ke Swar”, “Hamari Kavita ke Ankhar” and “Rang Dari Dio Albelin Main”. He was a noted poet too and many of his short poems have been recorded in his own voice. He was one of the founders and member of the editorial board of PAHAR, an organization which promoted Himalayan culture.

 

He was born on 10 September 1945 in Jyoli village of Almora District of present Uttarakhand. He attended school at the Government Inter College in Almora and completed his schooling at Nainital. Once he happened to meet noted writer and poet, Brijendra Lal Sah which inspired him a lot to become a writer. At the age of 21, he met social activists at Lakheempur Khiri who influenced him by their social activities. Thus at a younger age, he became a creative writer and a social activist. He has also involved with both “Chipko Movement and Uttarakhand Andolan during his youthful days.

 

As an editor, he joined “Shikharon ke Swar” in 1969, followed by “Hamari Kavita ke Ankhar” and “Rang Dari Dio Albelin Main”. He is also known as a noted theatre personality with many popular plays. His last compilation of poems was published in the year 2002 which included the themes - “Uttarakhand Andolan” and “Uttarakhand Kavya”. He died on August 22, 2010, after a brief illness.
