Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh Biography

Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh is a renowned painter and art critic who has received international acclamation. He is a recipient of Padmashri award in 1983 and Padmabhushan in 2014 for his contributions to Indian art. He was honoured by Kalidas Samman by Madhya Pradesh Government in 2002. He also received Lalit Kala Akademi award in 1962. He is also a writer who published a collection of poems titled Athwa and a prose series Gher Jatan. He currently lives in Vadodara with his wife, Nilima who is also an artist.

 

He was born in Surendranagar, Gujarat in the year 1937. He completed studies in painting at Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda and Royal College of Art, London before he started his professional career as a teacher in the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda in 1960. Since then he has worked as a faculty in many art schools including Fine Arts College, Baroda for many years till his retirement in 1993. After that he worked as a visiting professor at many art colleges in California, Italy etc.

 

As an artist he contributed more than four decades to the fields of art and painting. He is a renowned art critic too. Though born and brought up in Surendranagar, he spent most of his life time in Baroda where he worked as a faculty also. Now he is settled in Vadodara. His works are displayed in National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, USA. His art show titled “City, Kaavad and other works” was exhibited at the Lalit Kala Akademi's Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi in 2011. He is still active in the field.
