Ghulam Bhik Nairang Biography

Ghulam Bhik Nairang was a distinguished lawyer, a poet and a Muslim leader. He was also known by the name Meer Nairang. He has been a member of All-India Muslim League till India partition and later migrated to Pakistan. He died on October 16, 1952. As a writer he is equally popular in India and Pakistan. Sir Muhammad Iqbal, the great inspirer of the Pakistan Movement was his college mate and a close friend. Nairang’s poems were collectively published from Karachi in 1980, titled, Kalaam-e-Nairang.

He was born in 1876 in Ambala. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din was his birth name which was changed later. His father was a religious farmer. He lost his father at the age of 12 and later the family was financially supported by his mother. She also ensured him better education. She also advised him to work hard and gave him good moral values. Ghulam was a brilliant student during his academic period. It was during his graduation in Government College, Lahore while he got associated with Allama Iqbal, Chaudhry Jalal Din etc who later became his good friends and associates.

He completed LLB in 1899 and started practising as a lawyer from Ambala. He was a brilliant lawyer and earned fame in those days. However he joined politics and national movement very soon. He became Ambala’s Municipal Commissioner in 1901. He was elected as Member of Court, Delhi University in 1946.  Later he got associated with educational and public welfare activities. He was a prominent figure of All-India Muslim League and also contributed articles to many leading Urdu journals. “Kalaam-e-Nairang” in 1907 was his first published work. After partition he moved to Pakistan. Ghulam Bhik Nairang Foundation is a Pakistani organization named after him.
