George Fernandes Biography

George Fernandes is an Indian politician and member of Rajya Sabha representing Bihar. He belongs to the Janata Dal Party and founded Samta Party. He has served as the Minister of various portfolios like Communications, industry, defense and railways.

 

He was born on 3rd June 1930 in Mangalore in South Canara in British India. His parents are John Joseph Fernandes and Alice Martha Fernandes. He has five younger brothers, Lawrence, Michael, Aloysius, Paul and Richard. He was affectionately called as Gerry by his family. He completed his school final at St. Aloysius College at Mangalore.

 

He was sent to Bangalore in 1946 to get trained as the Roman Catholic Priest and he stayed there till 1948. He voiced for the exploited workers in road transport industry in Mangalore. He got a job as a proofreader in a newspaper. He joined the socialist trade union movement at this time. As a labor organizer he had to spend his days in prison many times.

 

He served as the editor of the Konkani language monthly Konkani Yuvak. He has written many books like What Ails the Socialists, The Kashmir Problem, Railway Strike of 1974, Dignity for All: Essays in Socialism and Democracy. His autobiography was titled as George Fernandes Speaks. He married Leila Kabir on 21st July 1971 and has one son Sean Fernandes.

 

From 1961 to 1968 he served as the member of the Bombay Municipal Corporation. He contested in the Bombay South constituency in 1967 elections as a Samyukta Socialist Party candidate and won.

 

He won from Muzaffarpur constituency in 1989 and 1991 elections and joined Janata Dal in 1988. He formed Samata Party in 1994. He served as the Defense Minister of India from 1998 to 2004. He became a member of Rajya Sabha on 4th August 2009.

 

His name was connected with the Tehelka Scandal and so he had to resign his post of Defense Minister. 

 

He died at the age of 88 on 29 January 2019, in Delhi following a swine flu infection.
