Gemini Ganesan Biography

Gemini Ganesan was an Indian actor who has the nickname of Kadhal Mannan. He played romantic roles in many films that he has acted which gave him this title. He was born on 17th November 1920 in Pudukkottai. He received Padma Shri Award for his contributions to film industry in the year 1971.

 

His parents were Ramaswami and Gangamma. He was the nephew of the first woman doctor Muthulakshmi Reddy. He too wanted to become a doctor. He married T. R. Alamelu and his father in law promised him a seat in the medical college after he completes his graduation. But his father in law died soon after his marriage and his dream of become a doctor could not be fulfilled. He got his graduation from Madras Christian College and started his career as a lecturer in Chemistry Department at the same college.

 

He went to Delhi to seek a career in Indian Air Force. He married Pushpavalli and Savitri. He is the father of the actress Rekha. But he did not acknowledge that he was the father of Rekha and it was revealed only after she became an actress. He had many wives and had seven daughters and one son. They are Revathi Swaminathan, Narayani Ganesh, Jaya Shridar, Rekha, Radha Usman Syed, Kamala Selvaraj, Vijaya Chamundeswari and Sathish Kumar Ganesan.

 

 His first hit film was Miss Malini. He acted as a villain in the film Thai Ullam. He acted as a hero for the first time in the film Manampol Mangalyam. He had acted with many heroines of the day like Saroja Devi, Sowkar Janaki, K. R. Vijaya, Devika, Jayalalitha, Padmini, Meena Kumari, Vyjayanthi Mala.

 

Some of the films that he has acted include Avvayar, Mallika, Valliyin Selvam, Maheswari, Rojulu Maravi, Guna Sundari, Prema Pasam, Devta, Bhale Ramudu, Asai, Charana Daasi, Pennin Perumai, Kalathur Kannamma, Parthiban Kanavu, Kairasi, Ellorum Innaattu Mannar, Sumaithangi, Parthal Pasi Theerum, Konjum Salamgai, Karpagam, Pareeksha, Lava Kusa, Kandan Karunai, etc.

 

In a time period of 50 years he had acted in more than 200 films. He played character roles in his old age in the films like Avvai Shanmugi, Kaalamellam Kaadhal Vaazhga, Gemini, Rudraveena, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, etc. He was given a seat in Rajya Sabha by Rajiv Gandhi but he did not accept it and stayed away from politics. He died on 22nd March 2005.
