Geeta Phogat Biography

Geeta Phogat is an Indian sportswoman who plays the game of wrestling. She took part in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and won gold medal in that becoming the first ever Indian woman to win in that game.

 

Geeta was born on 15th December 1988 in Balali village Bhiwani District of Haryana. Her father’s name is Mahavir Singh and her mother’s name is Daya Kaur. She has four sisters and two brothers, Sangeeta, Ritu, Priyanka, Seema, Vinesh and Dushyant who are also in the game of wrestling.

 

Her father himself was a former wrestler and is her coach in her younger days. He had to brave the severe criticisms from the villagers when his teenage daughters practiced the game of wrestling. However in the international championships of 2009 they won five gold medals for the country making everyone in their village dumbstruck.

 

Geeta and Babita won gold medals in their respective weight category in the Commonwealth Championships held at Jalandhar and Ritu, Priyanka and Vinesh came out with gold medals in the Asian Cadet Championships in Pune.

 

She was trained by O.P. Yadav and Ryan Dobo at Patiala and was qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. She is the first ever Indian women wrestler to compete in the game of Olympics. She won gold medal in the Wrestling FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament held at Almaty in Kazakhstan in April 2012 and got good training at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala.

 

She got a chance to win bronze medal in the Olympics 2012 but lost in the repechage round. However in the World Wrestling Senior Women Championship held at September 2012, she got bronze medal along with her sister Babita. She has been recommended for receiving the Arjuna Award 2012.
